The honest version, in 30 seconds
Every fax has to reach a real telephone number, and phone minutes cost money. That is why no service can hand out unlimited free faxes. What the free services do is sell your attention instead: they show you ads, stamp their name on your cover page, and cap you at roughly three pages and a few sends per day. For a single form, a signed lease, or a one-page doctor's note, that is genuinely enough — and it costs you nothing.
If you need to fax every week, receive faxes, or send anything sensitive, the free tier is the wrong tool and a $5-$15 monthly plan is the right one. This page tells you which situation you are in.
Send a free fax in 5 steps
- 1Get a clean PDF. Photos of paper fax badly. Use your phone's built-in scanner — Notes app on iPhone, Google Drive on Android — and export a PDF. Straighten it and crop to the page edges.
- 2Count your pages. The branded cover page usually counts toward the limit. Three free pages often means two pages of your document.
- 3Enter the recipient's fax number with the country and area code, digits only. A wrong digit still burns a free send.
- 4Confirm your email. Free services email you a confirmation link before they dial. Check spam — this is where most "it never sent" complaints come from.
- 5Save the delivery receipt. You get a success or failure email with a timestamp. If you are faxing a government or legal deadline, that receipt is your proof — screenshot it.
Free fax services compared
Free tiers change constantly. Confirm the current limit on the provider's own page before you rely on it — these are the shapes of the offers, not guarantees.

Never fax these for free
- Medical records or anything covered by HIPAA — free tiers do not sign a business associate agreement.
- Social Security numbers, passports, or driver's licenses.
- Bank statements, voided checks, wire instructions, or full card numbers.
- Signed contracts under NDA, or client files a law firm handles.
For any of the above, use a paid plan that publishes encryption and retention terms, or walk it to a physical machine. The $10 is cheaper than the breach.
Faxing from a phone without an app
Skip the app stores. Most "free fax" apps give you one page, then charge $3-$10 per fax through an in-app purchase, and several auto-renew a weekly subscription you did not notice. The mobile web version of the same providers is free and has no subscription trap.
- iPhone: Notes → new note → camera icon → Scan Documents → Share → Save to Files as PDF.
- Android: Google Drive → + → Scan → save as PDF.
- Then open the fax provider's site in Safari or Chrome and upload that PDF.
If your scan comes out as a HEIC photo instead of a PDF, run it through our free HEIC to JPG converter first — fax services reject HEIC almost universally.
Why your fax failed
- You dialed a voice line. Fax numbers and phone numbers look identical. Call it — a fax line screeches.
- The line was busy. Fax machines handle one call at a time. Retry in 15 minutes.
- Your file was too big. Free tiers often cap uploads around 20MB. Re-export the PDF at a lower scan quality.
- Color and shading. Faxes are black and white. Highlighter turns into a black smear — scan in grayscale or black-and-white mode.
- You hit the daily cap. Free services rate-limit per email address and per IP. Wait 24 hours or use a different provider.
Running a business that still gets faxes?
If clients are still faxing you, your website is probably doing less lead generation than it should be. Run the free 60-second audit and see what Google actually thinks of your site — indexing, mobile, speed, titles, and local signals, in plain English.
