Bing Robots.txt Validator

Validate your robots.txt the way Bingbot reads it: the Sitemap directive, the Disallow rules that apply to Bingbot, and noindex conflicts — before you submit to Bing Webmaster Tools.

What this checks

  • Your robots.txt loads at the domain root as plain text, not an HTML fallback page.
  • The Sitemap: line exists, is absolute, uses HTTPS, stays on your host, and the file behind it actually returns valid XML.
  • The Disallow rules Bingbot obeys — resolved from a bingbot/msnbot group when you have one, otherwise from User-agent: *.
  • Whether your sitemap URLs are blocked by your own rules (the contradiction Bing reports as a sitemap warning).
  • Noindex conflicts: pages carrying a noindex tag that Bingbot is also forbidden from fetching, so it never sees the tag.
  • Unsupported Noindex: directives and Crawl-delay values that throttle Bing to a standstill.

Pro tips

Bingbot has its own group

If a User-agent: bingbot block exists, Bing ignores the * block entirely. We resolve rules the same way.

Sitemap must be absolute

Bing needs the full https:// address on the Sitemap: line. Relative paths are ignored.

Noindex behind a block does nothing

Bingbot can't read a tag on a page it isn't allowed to fetch.

Never list blocked URLs

A sitemap URL your robots.txt disallows is a contradiction Bing reports as a sitemap warning.

Frequently asked questions

Mostly the same, with three real differences: Bing honours Crawl-delay (Google ignores it), Bing looks for a bingbot or msnbot user-agent group before falling back to *, and Bing's Webmaster Tools reports sitemap/robots contradictions as warnings on the sitemap itself. This tool resolves your rules using Bingbot's group, not Google's.
