Learn: The free site check

Everything worth knowing, in plain English

What the free site check actually measures

The check fetches your page the way a search engine would, with no browser extensions, no logged-in session and no JavaScript rendering assumptions, and grades what comes back. It looks at the title tag and meta description, the heading structure, whether the page is indexable, whether robots.txt and sitemap.xml exist and agree with each other, whether HTTPS is configured properly, how long the server takes to respond, how heavy the HTML document is, whether images have alt text and dimensions, whether structured data is present, and whether the page is usable on a phone.

Each result is a pass, a warning or a fail, with the evidence that produced it. There is no proprietary score hidden behind the number — every point is traceable to a specific check you can verify yourself.

How to read the score without panicking

A score in the fifties on a first run is completely normal, and most of the gap is usually two or three mechanical problems repeated across the site: missing meta descriptions, a slow server response, and images without dimensions. Those are afternoon fixes, not rebuilds.

Work top down and re-run after each change rather than fixing everything at once — that way you learn which change moved the number. Ignore the temptation to chase one hundred. Anything in the nineties is already better technical hygiene than the majority of small business sites you compete against, and beyond that point your ranking is decided by content quality and links, not by the last two percent of technical polish. Use the "fix it with AI" prompts on any item you do not understand; they include the evidence from your own scan so the answer you get back is specific to your page.
