A backlink audit identifies links that are actively hurting your site — spammy directories, link farms, PBN footprints, irrelevant foreign-language sites, hacked sites linking to you, and negative SEO attacks.

Google's algorithms generally ignore obvious junk links, but at scale they can still drag rankings down or trigger manual penalties. If you've ever bought links, used a "link package," had a fired SEO agency, or noticed sudden ranking drops, you need an audit.

The tool scores every backlink for toxicity (0-100) based on dozens of signals: domain age, IP neighborhood, outbound link patterns, content quality, anchor text manipulation, and historical penalty patterns. Anything scoring 60+ gets flagged for disavow.

When to disavow

Don't disavow casually. Google explicitly says most sites should never need to use disavow — the algorithm handles spam well. Disavow only if you have a manual action notice, a clear unnatural link pattern from past SEO work, or signs of a negative SEO attack.

If you do disavow, only include links you're certain are harmful. Accidentally disavowing legitimate links can drop rankings overnight.
