Common Website Mistakes That Cost Small Businesses Customers

After auditing thousands of small business sites, the same mistakes come up over and over. Here are the 10 biggest — and exactly how to fix each one.

After auditing thousands of small business websites, we keep seeing the exact same mistakes. None of them are exotic. None of them require a redesign. All of them quietly cost real customers every week.

Here are the ten biggest — in roughly the order they hurt the most.

1. No clear "what we do" above the fold

Visitors decide in about 3 seconds whether your site is worth scrolling. If your home page hero says "Welcome to Smith & Sons" without saying what Smith & Sons actually does, you've already lost half of them.

Fix: Replace the headline with a clear, specific statement: *"Emergency Plumbing in Mesa, AZ — 24/7 Service, 60-Minute Response."*

2. Phone number that isn't clickable

On mobile, a phone number in plain text is a missed call. Wrap it in <a href="tel:..."> so tapping calls.

Fix: <a href="tel:+15551234567">(555) 123-4567</a> in your header AND footer.

3. No Google Business Profile

For local businesses, the GBP is more important than the website itself. No profile = no map pack = no calls.

Fix: Walk through our Google Business Profile checklist. It's 30 minutes and free.

4. Giant unoptimized images

A 4MB hero image will take 6+ seconds to load on cellular. Half your visitors leave before they see it.

Fix: See our website speed checklist. Compress every image to WebP under 200KB.

5. Generic page titles

"Home – Untitled" or just "ACME Inc." tells Google nothing. Each page needs a unique, descriptive title under 60 characters.

Fix: Format: *Primary Keyword — Secondary Benefit | Brand*. Example: *Emergency Plumber in Mesa, AZ — Same-Day Repairs | Smith & Sons*.

6. No meta descriptions

The grey text under your title in Google results. If you skip it, Google writes one — and it's usually bad.

Fix: Write a 1–2 sentence summary (under 160 characters) that mentions what you do and invites the click.

7. Forms that ask for too much

Long contact forms kill conversions. Every extra field cuts submissions.

Fix: Name, phone, brief message. That's it. Ask for the rest when you call them back.

8. No social proof

Visitors don't know if you're trustworthy. Reviews, testimonials, and customer logos shortcut that.

Fix: Add 3–5 real reviews (with names and photos) above the fold or just below. Link to your Google review page so prospects can verify.

9. Outdated copyright year in the footer

Tiny detail, big trust signal. "© 2019" makes a site look abandoned.

Fix: Make the year dynamic: new Date().getFullYear() or <?php echo date('Y'); ?>.

10. No clear next step

Every page should tell the visitor exactly what to do next: call, book, get a quote, download. Vague pages with no CTA waste traffic.

Fix: One primary CTA per page. Make it big, button-styled, and impossible to miss. *"Get a Free Quote"* or *"Call Now"* beats *"Learn More"* every time.

Bonus: the 11th mistake

Never running an audit. You can't fix what you don't measure. Run a free 60-second site check and you'll know in one report exactly which of these (and a dozen more) apply to your site.

A weekend triage plan

  • Saturday morning — fix the home page headline, make phone number clickable, set the copyright year dynamically.
  • Saturday afternoon — compress the top 5 images, claim your Google Business Profile.
  • Sunday — rewrite titles and meta descriptions for your top 3 pages, add 3 reviews above the fold.

That's the difference between a site that loses customers and one that wins them — fixed in a weekend.
