The Beginner SEO Checklist: 21 Things Every Small Business Site Needs
A complete, prioritized SEO checklist for small businesses — from claiming your Google profile to fixing your meta descriptions. Print it and tick it off.
SEO can feel overwhelming. There are thousands of articles, hundreds of "ranking factors," and dozens of tools all yelling for your attention.
Forget all that. For a small business website, ranking on Google comes down to about 21 specific things. Get them done — most in a weekend — and you'll outrank 90% of your local competitors.
Here's the checklist. Work top to bottom.
Foundation (do these first)
1. Buy a real domain
yourbusiness.com is non-negotiable. Free subdomains (yourbusiness.wixsite.com) hurt trust and SEO.
2. Set up SSL (HTTPS)
Every modern host gives you this free. If your site loads on HTTP only, fix it today.
3. Connect Google Search Console
Free, takes 5 minutes. This is how you submit your sitemap and see which pages Google has indexed.
4. Submit your sitemap
In Search Console, paste in sitemap.xml and click submit.
5. Create a robots.txt file
Most platforms have one already. Make sure it's not accidentally blocking Google.
On-page SEO
6. Unique page titles
Every page. Under 60 characters. Mention what you do.
7. Unique meta descriptions
Every page. Under 160 characters. Inviting click language.
8. One H1 per page
The H1 is the main visible headline. Use it once per page, mentioning the primary topic.
9. Logical H2 / H3 structure
Subheadings should follow a clear hierarchy (H2 under H1, H3 under H2). Don't skip levels.
10. Real content (300+ words minimum per page)
Empty pages don't rank. Aim for 500+ words on home and service pages.
11. Image alt text
Every image needs a short description. Helps SEO and accessibility.
12. Internal links
Link from your home page to your service pages. From service pages to relevant blog posts.
Local SEO
13. Claim your Google Business Profile
The single biggest local SEO action. Free. 10 minutes. See our GBP checklist.
14. Consistent NAP
Name, Address, Phone — exactly the same everywhere on the internet.
15. Get on 5 local directories
Yelp, BBB, Facebook, Apple Maps, your Chamber of Commerce.
16. Add LocalBusiness schema
Tells Google explicitly: I'm a real local business. Plugin handles this on most platforms.
Technical SEO
17. Mobile-friendly
Open the site on your phone. Tap every link. Fix anything broken.
18. Fast loading (under 3 seconds)
Test on PageSpeed Insights. Compress images first.
19. Working forms and CTAs
Every contact form should be tested monthly. Broken forms are a silent leads killer.
20. No broken links
Run a free broken link checker every quarter.
21. Add a privacy policy
Required by law in most regions. Use our free generator.
How to use this checklist
Print it. Block out a Saturday. Work top to bottom. Most small business owners can knock out 15+ items in a single morning.
Then run GoogleSiteScore to verify.
The single most common mistake we see is owners skipping the foundation steps and going straight to "I want to rank for X keyword." Without the foundation, no amount of keyword work helps. With the foundation, simple keyword targeting starts working immediately.
Build the foundation. The rest is a lot easier.
